What a 505 Spotlight Feature Reveals About Our Approach to Whole Person Care in Albuquerque

Being recognized by 505 Spotlight gave us an opportunity to share the story behind ABQ Osteopathic Clinic, LLC. More importantly, it highlighted what we believe patients deserve from their healthcare experience: time to be heard, physician-led evaluation, practical treatment options, and a care plan that considers the whole person.
Located along the Menaul Boulevard corridor in Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights, ABQ Osteopathic Clinic serves adults and children through a personalized, direct-pay model. Our approach combines conventional family medicine with osteopathic manipulative treatment and integrative therapies. We do not ask patients to choose between medical expertise and holistic care. We believe both can work together.
Whole Person Care Does Not Mean Abandoning Conventional Medicine
The term “holistic” can mean different things to different people. At ABQ Osteopathic Clinic, holistic care means recognizing the interconnection between the body, mind, spirit, lifestyle, and medical concerns that bring a person into the office.
It does not mean rejecting conventional medicine.
Dr. Mark Stevens is a board-certified osteopathic family physician. He evaluates acute and ongoing concerns, reviews medical histories, performs physical examinations, orders laboratory testing, and can perform EKGs and selected office procedures when appropriate. His training allows him to approach health concerns through the full scope of family medicine while also considering musculoskeletal structure, movement, stress, and function.
This combination is important for patients who want a holistic doctor in Albuquerque without giving up physician-level medical evaluation. A patient may come in with pain, fatigue, headaches, an injury, or several concerns that do not fit neatly into one category. The goal is to understand the full picture before deciding what treatment makes sense.

Time to Listen Is a Clinical Tool
One of the clearest themes in the 505 Spotlight feature is the value of time.
Many patients have experienced short appointments where they must quickly identify one problem, describe one symptom, and leave before they have asked their most important questions. That format may not work well for people with complex, chronic, or overlapping concerns.
At ABQ Osteopathic Clinic, Dr. Stevens prioritizes quality over quantity. Appointments allow patients to explain what brought them in, describe how symptoms affect daily life, and discuss concerns that may not belong to a single diagnostic category.
That conversation can reveal important details:
- When a symptom began and what may have contributed to it.
- How pain, stress, sleep, movement, and daily habits interact.
- What treatments have already been attempted.
- What the patient hopes to accomplish.
- Which options may be reasonable, and which may not be appropriate.
This process creates a collaborative journey rather than a one-way clinical transaction. Patients remain active participants in decisions about their health.
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment Is Central to Our Care
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, or OMT, is one of the central services at ABQ Osteopathic Clinic. OMT uses hands-on techniques to evaluate and treat areas of restricted movement, muscular tension, joint dysfunction, and other physical findings.
Dr. Stevens may use more direct osteopathic techniques when appropriate. He also has training in gentler cranial osteopathic techniques. The method depends on the patient, the clinical findings, the treatment goals, and the physician’s assessment.

OMT is integrated into the medical evaluation. It is not treated as a separate experience disconnected from the rest of a patient’s health. Dr. Stevens considers medical history, symptoms, medications, current conditions, physical examination findings, and whether hands-on treatment is safe and appropriate.
For patients seeking osteopathic manipulative treatment or chronic pain relief in Albuquerque, this integrated process provides a way to address both immediate discomfort and the broader factors affecting movement and function. OMT is not a guaranteed cure, and it is not appropriate for every condition. A thorough evaluation comes first.

A Lot of Tools in the Toolbox
Patients do not all need the same treatment. Some benefit from OMT alone. Others may need laboratory testing, an office procedure, lifestyle support, or a combination of services.
Dr. Stevens describes the clinic as having “a lot of tools in the toolbox.” Depending on the patient’s needs, available services may include:
- Direct osteopathic manipulation.
- Cranial osteopathic treatment.
- Dry needling.
- Trigger point injections.
- Joint injections.
- Prolotherapy.
- Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, services.
- Radiofrequency therapy.
- 40K ultrasound therapy.
- Laboratory testing.
- Hypnosis and relaxation techniques.
- Medical weight management.
- Medical cannabis certifications.
- Conventional family medicine.
- Urgent care evaluation by appointment when appropriate.

This range does not mean every patient should receive every service. It means the care plan can be built around the individual rather than around a single procedure or predetermined pathway.
For someone searching for pain management in Albuquerque, the first step is a medical conversation. Dr. Stevens evaluates the concern, explains potential options, and discusses limitations, risks, and expected goals. The treatment plan should make sense for the patient’s health and circumstances.
The clinic also maintains firm boundaries. ABQ Osteopathic Clinic does not prescribe controlled substances, including narcotics. Our focus is on physician-led evaluation, hands-on care, non-controlled treatment options, integrative services, and responsible wellness planning.
Dr. Mark Stevens Brings Military and Civilian Experience
Dr. Stevens is a New Mexico native with more than 17 years of physician experience, including residency training. He attended Touro University Nevada College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated in 2009. He then completed family medicine residency training at Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency.
His experience includes both military and civilian medicine. Dr. Stevens served four years on active duty in the United States Air Force, including a deployment to Afghanistan where he worked as an intensive care ward physician. He has also worked in urgent care and primary care settings.
That background informs his practical, comprehensive approach. He understands the importance of evaluating urgent concerns carefully while also supporting patients who need longer-term strategies for pain, mobility, stress, weight, and overall wellness.
His interest in independent practice began early. His father was an entrepreneur, massage therapist, and esthetician who encouraged him to build a practice around service, independence, and personal connection. Dr. Stevens first started ABQ Osteopathic Clinic around 2013 or 2014. After time spent working in other practices and attending to family responsibilities, he reopened the clinic in April 2026.
Direct Pay Means Clearer Financial Expectations
ABQ Osteopathic Clinic operates as a direct-pay practice and does not bill insurance. This policy is stated clearly because financial transparency is part of patient trust.
The direct-pay structure gives Dr. Stevens more freedom to spend time listening, evaluating concerns, and discussing options without organizing the entire encounter around insurance billing requirements. It also allows the clinic to communicate fees directly to patients.
Patients should understand that services are not billed to insurance, and they are responsible for reviewing costs before receiving care. Fees can vary according to the service and the complexity of the visit. If you have questions about pricing, contact the office before scheduling.
This model is not the right fit for everyone. We believe it is important to explain that plainly so patients can make informed decisions.
A Collaborative Visit in Albuquerque’s Northeast Heights
A first appointment typically begins with conversation. Dr. Stevens wants to understand the patient’s symptoms, health history, goals, and concerns. He may then perform a medical and osteopathic structural evaluation before discussing appropriate next steps.
Depending on the findings, the plan may include:
- Additional testing or laboratory work.
- An EKG or selected office procedure.
- Osteopathic manipulative treatment.
- A referral or coordination with another healthcare professional.
- Lifestyle, relaxation, or weight-management support.
- Another integrative therapy offered by the clinic.
- Continued observation and follow-up.

Patients do not need to arrive with a perfect explanation or a predetermined treatment choice. They only need a willingness to participate in the process and communicate openly about what they are experiencing.
ABQ Osteopathic Clinic welcomes adults and children, with a particular interest in caring for people who want to take an active role in improving their health. We do not accept walk-in appointments. Patients can request an appointment online, call (505) 361-4554, or text the clinic.
